Three weeks into June’13, the ra ins
were in full swing in Mumba i a nd the surrounding western gha ts
region. The trek to Kotliga d wa s just done the previous weekend a nd our group decided on a
wa terfa ll
outing for a cha nge. There a re
quite a number of na tura l wa terfa lls
in close proximity to Mumba i. Saturday, June 29, 2013, we set towards Kalote waterfalls.
We zeroed in on K
This trip included a lot of our friends who couldn’t ma ke it to the trek on the ea rlier
weekend a s well. All of us decided to
meet up a t ‘Da da r’ sta tion
being the connecting sta tion between
the centra l ra ilwa y a nd
western ra ilwa y
of Mumba i. Kris, Kevin, Hamilton a nd Clive decided to meet us a t
‘Chowk’ junction directly a s they
were commuting by their respective bikes. Cleona , Dua na a nd me
met a t Da da r station a t
8a m a nd
took a tra in
to ‘Ka rja t’
sta tion from where we boa rded a n
ST bus to ‘Chowk’ junction. Alighting a t
Chowk, we met up with the bikers.
Ricksha w drivers a greed to drop us on side of the highwa y from where it’s a
ca sua l
hike of 30-40 minutes to the wa terfa ll. Bikes a nd
ca rs ca n
be driven up this pa th a nd pa rked at close proximity of the wa terfa ll.
From this pa rking spot, it is a 5 minutes wa lk
to the wa terfa ll. This waterfall is located at approximately 20 kms from Karjat station in the area named 'Khalapur'.
We rea ched
the wa terfa ll
between 12.30-1pm. The wa terfa ll doesn’t seem strong a s
one fea red, but if were to sit below
the wa terfa ll,
the brute force ca n be experienced a nd one shouldn’t miss out on tha t. There were just a
couple of fa milies there, but no one
venturing close to the wa terfa ll. So, we got a
nice little spot just for ourselves. The wa ter
wa s cold, but a
quick dip a nd the body gets a cclima tized
to the tempera ture of the wa ter. One ca n
ca tch sight of empty pla stic bottles being strewn a long
with other pla stic wa ste on the sides. This is the sa d pa rt
tha t ha sn’t
been inculca ted in ma jority of the people a nd
it’s a long and strenuous fight a ga inst environmental
pollution. We ca ught a guy throwing a n empty pla stic
bottle into the strea m a nd we picked it up a nd
requested him to dump it in a
dustbin a wa y
from the place. A condescending smile a nd he threw
it ba ck in a wa y from our rea ch.
It’s a fight tha t just ca nnot
be won unless the thought is inculca ted
from within oneself or stringent la ws
a re in pla ce
for the sa me; both which seem highly
unlikely in the nea r future.
Munching on sa ndwiches a ll
a fternoon, it wa s complete bliss. Admiring na ture’s
bea uty a nd
rela xing; sha ring
stories a mongst ea ch other. The ca mera pictures a re
a bit blurry a nd
ha zy ca use
of the wea ther. Pa cking our stuff up, we proceeded towa rds our bikes a t
5pm, in order to ca tch a direct bus to ‘Ka rja t’ sta tion
or a ricksha w
to ‘Chowk’ junction. With no ricksha w
pa ssing, Kris a nd
Clive a greed to ferry us in turns
until Chowk, ta king 2 people a s pillion. Cleona, Hamilton a nd Kevin proceeded directly towa rds ‘Ka rja t’ sta tion
a s they wa nted
to go in the comfort of the tra in
journey while Kris, Dua na , Clive a nd
myself decided to do the return journey by bike. Returning home by 10pm, it wa s not a
strenuous da y a nd
a da y
well spent close to Mumba i a nd full of memories to cherish.
